Free Pattern: NSP Square

So I feel really bad for posting this tutorial a week after the fact, but I made a Danny Sexbang themed granny square in honor of his birthday!

This one is definitely for advanced beginners, as the attachment is rather tricky.

Ravelry Pattern Page

Materials:

  • 5.00mm (H) and 4.5mm hooks. You will use the 5.00mm hook for the star, and the rest will be worked with the 4.5 hook. You can try this pattern with a 4.00mm(G) hook, but IMO it gets pretty bunched up.
  • Worsted Weight yarn in red, white, and blue (I used Bernat Super Value in Royal Blue,Deborah Norville Everyday Soft in Really Red, and Vanna’s Choice in White. This was all stuff I had as scrap/in my stash, so feel free to use different brands to make this.)

Pattern

Star:

Start by making a magic circle and ch 2.

R1: 11 dc in circle. Pull yarn tail to close hole. Join to ch2. (12 dc)
R2: 2 dc in every st. (24 dc)R3: Ch 1, *sc, hdc, [hdc, dc, ch3, dc, hdc] all into the same stitch, hdc. Repeat from * 5 more times.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Attaching the White Yarn

Switch your hook to a smaller size now! It’ll save a lot of headache for the next step. Attaching the white yarn is a bit tricky, as you’re working stitches into the wrong side of the star, as seen in the pictures above and below.

To start, you attach your white yarn to the back of one of the stitches from R2. Ch2, skip 2, sc into the next st, ch2, skip 3, sc into the next st, and you repeat this pattern until you reach the first st and join.  This tutorial from Repeat Crafter Me is really good at explaining this technique.
It’s really weird since you’re trying to fit 7 ch3 spaces into the back of a six sided shape, but it’ll work out I swear!

Circle:

R4:Ch2, *2dc cluster, ch1, 2dc, ch1. Repeat from * into each chain space in the round, join. (14 2dc clusters)

R5:Ch2, 2dc cluster, ch1, *3dc, ch1. Repeat from *  into each chain space in the round, join. (14 3dc clusters)

R6:Ch2, *2dc cluster, ch1, 2dc cluster, ch1. Repeat from * into each chain space in the round, join. (28 2dc clusters)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Squaring the Circle:

Now we’re going to attach the blue yarn and work around the circle to form a square. Attach the blue yarn where one of the star’s points and the middle of a cluster align. Here’s a pic of my hook point to the space:

image

R7: Ch2 and sc into the ch1 space. Repeat all around the circle, join.
R8: Ch1 *2sc, ch1, [sc, hdc] in the same sp, ch1, 2dc in the same sp, [ch1, 2tr cluster, ch3, 2tr cluster] in the same sp, ch 1,  2dc in the same sp, ch1,  [sc, hdc] in the same sp, ch1,  2sc, ch1. Repeat from * three more times, join.
R9: Ch2, dc, *ch1, 2dc in the ch1 sp. Repeat until you reach a corner, where you will do 2dc, ch2, 2dc, ch1, and then continue from * until the next corner.

Fasten off and weave in ends, and you’re done!

Make a bunch to sew together to make a blanket, or make this with cotton yarn to make a coaster or dishcloth!
